No school! Hybrid school! Zoom Classes! eLearning! Masks! Social Distancing!
There's no denying our young students had to be adaptable last year. Many of them are so young they may never have heard the word “adapt” yet they have been wonderful examples of the importance of adaptability for being successful and happy. Earlier this year Camp Navigate’s CiCi Chew interviewed a community leader to learn a little more about the importance of adaptability.
Steve Holman, CEO of Union Health, also knows a thing or two about adaptability. He views adaptability as one of the top traits needed for success.
“Always be open to new ideas. [...]There is always a right way to do something but there can be multiple right ways. If you’re willing to listen to someone else's way and it still achieves what you want to do, that’s ok!”
Mr. Holman goes on to attribute the ability to adapt to being happy.
“When I’m adaptable, I have peace and happiness about me, but when I’m rigid and I’m the opposite and I’m not adaptable I feel frustrated and angry and that is no way to be at all.”
Camp Navigate aims to teach this important employability skill to our students with methods more easily understood and without the frustrations of COVID. Through many activities during the school year and at our summer camp, students are given the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to face a dilemma and make the necessary changes to arrive at an acceptable conclusion. This problem-solving process allows development of their leadership, resourcefulness, creativity, analytical skills, as well as their self-confidence and self-control. All of these adaptability characteristics will be welcome traits to our students’ future employers as statistics tell us one of the top skills those future employers are seeking is ADAPTABILITY!
